The most important things when working with youth Basketball players.
What are you gonna practice?
When you do practice what are you going to teach?
The first thing that you have to teach kids that are beginners – and you also have to teach it of kids that are veterans – is that playing is not practicing.
When you practice, you practice individual pieces of your game in the hopes of making your whole game better.
Teach kids for them to understand
Its your purpose as a coach – that as you’re practicing you have to accept short-term losses for long-term gains because you might be working with them on things that they’re either uncomfortable with or they’ve never done before, so there’s gonna be a motivational problem because your greatest motivator is success.
If a kid’s not having a whole lot of success, then he’s gonna wonder, Why am I gonna do all this work? and rightly so, but it’s part of your job as a coach to motivate those kids. But I’m always – I’m okay with accepting short-term losses for long- term gains. And to put that in a language that kids of all ages might be able to understand is that I have them go out and shoot a few shots. And let’s say the kids makes three out of ten, but I wanna teach him the proper form.
I need to explain to him, I’m going to change his shot, and here’s why. It’s because I think that you’ll become a better shooter as you grow, and what you have to understand is today you may make three out of ten shooting your way. You may make zero out of ten shooting my way. That’s expected. You work on it every day, and in two weeks your way you could still make three out of ten; my way you’re gonna make one out of ten. You work on it for a couple more weeks, your way you’re gonna make three out of ten; my way you’re gonna make two out of ten.
Then you’re gonna start to see some changes. You work on it another couple of weeks or a month, your way you’re gonna make three out of ten; my way you’re gonna make three out of ten. You work on it some more, your way you’re still making three out of ten; my way now you’re making five out of ten. We go a few more weeks or a month or two months or however long it takes depending on how old the kid is, Your way you’re still making three out of ten; my way now you’re making seven out of ten. So it’s gonna take time for you to get better, but you will get better.
how quickly you get better and how much you get better is directly dependent upon how much you work on what I have you work on. And this is different than older kids, because older kids already have established habits. So we’re talking about kids 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 years old, and sometimes it’s gonna get frustrating for them because they’re not gonna be able to do what they see people do on TV.
